Blank voicemails

I get a random notification of getting a voicemail (upto 5 times a day) and when i check the voicemail and listen to the new messages its literally just a recording of silence. Nothing is being said. No background noises. When i check my call logs to see who called i have NO MISSED CALLS. So my voicemail is not working properly. I can only hold three voicemails so i really dislike having to delete these "empty" voicemails multiple times a day just so i dont miss calls from work. How can this problem be fixed?

I am having this problem as well, and my phone isn't off. I'll get a notification of a new voicemail message but no phone number attached and no one has called. It's just empty air on these voicemails. This happens all day, every day. Yesterday it was full of these blank messages and my doctor was trying to call me and I was away from my phone. What can be done about this? I need action because I'm about to throw this phone out the window.

Hey @TimeFoolery !

Welcome to the Community Very_Happy

Could you please press 5 after you hear the voicemail message?

This should allow you to find out the phone number from which these messages come from.

Keep us posted. Smiley

My wife too is getting these blank messages up to 15 a day, and of course her mailbox gets full.

Will try the pressing 5 after listening to the dead air on the vm and see what happens.

Thanks,

Dano

Hey @Dano55353

Have you been able to try?

My wife was able to capture the phone number of the blank empty VM messages by doing exactly what Allan suggested with pressing 5 at the end of the message.  She has the full number and it appears to be a Barrie area number.

What should she do now with that info?

Many thanks,

Dano55353

Hey @Dano55353

If you suspect that it was a spam call, you can report those to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre:

If it's not a number that you recognize and you no longer wish to receive calls from that number, you can also block it from the settings of your device directly.

Hey @Caseyinked1

Welcome to the Community Smiley

That's definitely odd. You might get a voicemail without seeing a missed call if your phone was off or out of reach.

Have you checked to see if you could find the information on the caller? You should be able to see who left you the message by pressing 5 after you hear the message. This might help in seeing where the messages are coming from.

Let me know!

My wife too has been getting empty VM notifications.  Her phone iPhone 6s does occasionally notify her faintly of a new message.  She did capture the number after pressing 5 at the end of the message.  We did try to block the number by putting it in her contacts, and then blocking it.  Didn't work as she got several empty VM's again yesterday.  Is there anyway Fido can block the number to her from your end?

The number seems to be from Barrie Area.  One moderator mentioned to notify the Cdn Anti-Fraud centre, but it's not asking for anything, so there's no fraud, just dead air in the message?  Fills up the voice mailbox daily and with only 3 messages allowed, thus  important one's can't be left.

Update everyone:

Well I think I have now figured out what is going on.  The number that keeps calling my wife is her specialist in Barrie but it's their fax line.  I'm wondering if when the fax doesn't go thru to her cell phone, if it keeps trying with continued failure.  She has been expecting a lab requisition but why they would try and send it to her cell is beyond us.  Will be contacting the office in Barrie to get to the bottom of it.  Will notify everyone on the weekend is we have solved the issue.

Hey @Omid007 !

Did you try @FidoPamela's suggestion to see who the messages are from?

That's good news, @Caseyinked1 Smiley

Perfect, keep us in the loop if this ever occurs again.

Hi

I am getting this too - nearly every day up to 2 or 3 times.

I have gotten a lot of spam calls, which I ended up blocking numbers for, so I suspect these are numbers I have blocked, but if my phone allows me to filter the calls, why can't it filter the voice mails too?

Hello CharlotteR21,

  Welcome to the community!

I understand how frustrating it can be to receive SPAM calls and subsequent voicemail. Filtering calls using a phone's call block or call reject function simply forwards the calls to your voicemail without ringing your phone. The filtering occurs at your phone so the call has already gone through the networks. For voicemails to be filtered as well, the call blocks would have to occur at the network level. However, it is unfortunately not currently possible for the networks to block those calls at the network level. Often the spammers use spoofed numbers when making those calls or sending SPAM SMS. Those numbers usually belong to unsuspecting people who only find out their numbers are being spoofed when irate SPAM recipients reply demanding they stop calling or texting. Blocking those numbers means potentially blocking innocent customers from using their services.

Unfortunately, until the technology to unmask the true number of spammers/scammers is readily available (not simply the number shown on the caller ID), the only solution currently is to block the numbers on your phone. That said, it is hopeful to note that the CRTC is trying to implement measures to reduce nuisance calls (see here and here).

There are (or at least there were) apps which claim to be able to prevent blocked calls from going to voicemail. They do/did so by answering and almost simultaneously hanging up the calls without letting the phone ring. They did prevent those calls from going to voicemail. However, you should note that the calls were technically answered and therefore counted against any minute allotments you may have.

Hope this helps Smiley

Cheers

Hello again,

Just to add to my previous post... It should also be noted that using such apps may inadvertently lead to an increase in SPAM calls. Many spammers use computers to sequentially run through phone numbers to find active phone numbers to further target. Since those apps technically answer the calls, there actions no doubt inform the computers that the phone number is indeed active.

Hope this helps Smiley

It would be an amazing to have fido update their voicemail system to filter out Voicemails that have no sound whatsoever or quick hangups. Would be a dope feature!
