Welcome back to our New to Canada Guide series, where we make your move to Canada easier. π
In this edition, weβll be covering the topics of credit score and banking.
What is a credit score?
Itβs a 3-digit number that comes from the information in your credit report.
It shows how well you manage your financial status.
Learn more here.
Why is it important to me?
Itβs important because most businesses in Canada require it for:
Housing.
Getting a credit card.
Financing or leasing a car.
Financing a phone.
Taking out a bank loan.
Learn more here.
How to build a credit score?
You can build it by:
Opening a Canadian bank account and getting a Canadian banking card.
Paying your debts and bills on time (pro tip: set up automatic payments with Fido!)
Fun fact: your Fido bill counts as your proof of residency!
Not applying for a lot of credit cards or checking your score too often.
Where does banking fit in with all of this?
You canβt get a credit card without a bank account.
Open a Canadian bank account and use your debit card to build financial history.
Eventually, youβll be able to get a credit card.
Continue building your credit score with your credit card by paying bills on time.
We hope this helps, see you in our next series!

Hey there!
Welcome to our New to Canada Guide series β weβre here to help make your move to Canada easier!
Read our first series below to learn more about government ID cards and how to apply for them.
Social Insurance Number (SIN) card
To work in Canada or access government programs and benefits, you need a 9-digit SIN card. Applying online is quick, easy and free.
*Pro tips*
Keep your SIN private β protect your identity, financial status and more.
Skip waiting in line at government or service offices by booking appointments online.
Health card
Your health card proves youβre covered by your province or territoryβs health insurance plan. Youβll need to show it every time you see a doctor, visit a clinic or an emergency room at a hospital.
Driverβs License card
A driver's licence is issued by your province or territory that allows you to drive in Canada legally. You must carry it with you whenever you drive.
*Pro tip*
If you have a driver's licence from your home country, you may be able to speed up the application process.
Provincial/Photo ID card
Provincial IDs are another form of primary government-issued ID used for Canadians without a Driverβs Licence. This card makes activities that require proof of identity or age easier, such as opening a bank account.
*Pro tip*
Apply for your provincial/photo ID card first β itβs the easiest to get and is accepted everywhere as legal identification. Plus, you can keep your passport safe at home!
Explore the links in the table below to understand the qualifications for applying for your government ID cards.
