I recently upgraded my plan to include data (just had cell service before). We assumed the data plan would automatically start working after a few days but we cannot figure out how to activate the data plan?

I'd like you to try one more thing though. Can you make sure you have the right APN settings? You'd need them if you have an unlocked phone. You can check them out here.
I'd also suggest resetting your network settings.
