Unlock iPhone XR device

My son wants to unlock his last phone he used with Fido iPhone XR before he upgraded, so he can give it to his grandparents to use. He doesn't have a SIM card from another company to insert to get it unlocked with Fido as I read he needed. I also read that it may not need to be unlocked. Does anyone have any info or suggestions for this issue. Thanks so much!

Hi there @Smidge71 , if you can borrow a Sim card for your son to try,  he could find out right away. All phones in Canada come unlocked as of about 5 years ago, so it's most likely it is already unlocked. I recommend reaching out to a friend or going to an apple store and have a different Sim card installed to verify. Most apple devices need to be unlocked by apple if my information is correct.
