Does running many applications in the background impact battery drain?

Even since iOS supported multiple background applications I have been concerned that it will cause my battery to drain faster. Can anyone confirm if this is the case? Right now, I tend to keep manually closing apps out of fear they will kill my battery.

I can confirm that leaving applications opened in the background does drain the battery faster, the speed at which it drains depending on the applications left opened.
