will my fido chip work in a virgin mobile phone?

As long as the Virgin Mobile phone is able to use SIM cards and it is 'unlocked', it will work.

its not a good idea to assume all "chip" phones will work with fido.

Fido uses a special frequency, there are phones with sim cards from virgin mobile UK that do not work on fido,  however virgin mobile usa phones that are 3G HSPA will work on the 850/1900 bands.  there are pleanty of threads discussing the fido frequencies and technologies on here.
