I need a few clarifications regarding wifi calling, my current situation is:
1. I've activated wifi calling while in Canada
2. I'm travelling and My phone is currently connected to the local wifi network
3. I have aeroplane mode on and data off
4. My fido package includes unlimited calls and messages in Canada
5. I have no travel roam plan with Fido
6. I have an iPhone device.
Question:
1. Will I be charged for attending a call that comes from a Canadian number while connected to wifi roaming?
2. With my current settings, is it possible for me to be charged for data while on whatsapp or using any app. I ask this because people have mentioned in forums that they still got charged for data as certain apps will automatically switch to the carriers data plan even if it's off in certain scenarios and I'm now very confused how that may be possible.
appreciate any responses I may get.

Hello Zsquared,
Welcome to the community!
Firstly, you should note that the Fido Roam is already enabled on most current plans. In addition, the Fido Roam charges will incur if your phone uses services -- make or receive a call, send a text message or use data abroad. If you did not wish to use Fido Roam, you would need to opt-out of the feature. In doing so, any usage would be on a pay-per-use basis. You can view those rates in the link provided above.
It should be noted that while using Wifi for regular internet access will not incur Fido Roam charges, there seems to be some misunderstanding regarding Wifi-calling. I'm not sure how people have gotten the impression that Wifi-calling does not use the networks. However, that is not true. While the calls and messages do not transmit via cellular towers, they still use the networks via the internet gateway (see image here). The cellular towers and Wifi are merely alternate means of accessing the networks. Calls and messages would not be able to complete or get sent/received without the networks. As such, using Wifi-calling is technically using Fido services. Having said that, they have allowed certain usage to be free from additional charges. All the messages and calls received (from anywhere in the world) will be taken from a plan's voice minutes and messaging limits. As well, all Wifi-calling messages and calls made to a Canadian phone number while abroad won't incur long-distance or roaming charges (see link above).
So when using the feature, all Wifi-calling messages and calls you receive would not incur roaming charges.

In order to prevent unintended roaming charges, it is generally recommended to disable data and roaming data. However, you should note that disabling those settings does not prevent roaming for voice and messaging. In addition, some manufacturers might allow some data usage to occur despite those settings (see here). Since you have Airplane mode enabled, it should prevent the device from connecting to the local cellular towers. So you should not get charged for data when using WhatsApp or any other app since your phone isn't able to connect to cellular towers to use services.
I do not know to which scenarios you refer. However, there is a longstanding potential issue with WhatsApp. There appears to be a bug with WhatsApp. While it's not mentioned on their website, it seems as though the app will automatically switch to using mobile airtime minutes (within the app) if it deems the internet connection is insufficient for voice calls. It has happened to many people across Countries and even Continents (see here). In this case, though, the issue is long-distance charges rather than data usage. If it were to happen abroad, roaming charges would also likely apply. It would be important to note that the same issue might occur with other calling apps as well. That said, enabling Airplane or Flight mode and manually enabling Wifi prior to making the call(s) should prevent the app from switching to mobile minutes if the Wifi internet connection is not sufficient.
You should note the forums are community-driven and not intended as a venue for customer services. If you wished to discuss your matter and/or opt-out of Fido Roam, you would need to contact customer service. In addition, they can also be contacted via Live Chat, Facebook, or Twitter. Those methods can be accessed via the contact page posted above.
Hope this helps 😀
