Received a used iphone from abroad

Is it possible to have a secondhand old iphone unlocked that was sent to me by a friend living in England.It is not tied into any contract at the moment and wanted to add it to my fido account.Not sure if she has wasted her postage sending it to me!

If a phone is locked, it may only be unlocked by the original seller (service provider)
