I'm going to be moving from BC to Alberta in the near future. I want to be able to keep my phone number and my fido plan when I do. Am I able to do that? I've had my number for 40+ years through various providers. I can see changing area codes.
thanks

Hello Grevious,
Welcome to the community!
You can certainly use a number from a different Province. However, you should note that your phone number's region would have to remain the same. The area codes, by definition, are designated by a region or area. In addition, the area code and prefix combination determine the local calling areas (LCAs; see here). If you are porting your number from another provider, the process does not change the area code nor prefix so your phone number would remain a British Colombia phone number.
If you would like to obtain an Alberta phone number, you would need to select one with an area code and prefix from that location.
You should note that while many of Fido's plans include Canada-wide calling, some plans might only include Provincial or local calling. If you keep your phone number and are living in Alberta, you might need to consider what entails long-distance.
Your incoming local-calling area (LCA) is based on the geographical location that is associated with your number. It has nothing to do with your own physical location at the time you receive a call. On the other hand, your outgoing LCA is determined entirely by your physical location at the time of a call, and has no ties to any specific geographical location, other than the one in which you’re standing.
All incoming and outgoing calls are considered airtime. Receiving calls while outside of your incoming LCA is considered LD. Making calls while travelling can either be local or LD, depending on whether the call destinations are within or outside of your outgoing LCA.
In addition, you should note that calls to your phone number would likely be considered long-distance for Alberta residents. Another consideration would be that some institutions might not be able to dial long-distance numbers. For example, I happen to live outside of my incoming LCA so my number is deemed long-distance for those in my area. My building's intercom buzz system is not able to dial my number for its service. I had to get a local pre-paid number for that purpose.
You should further note that the plans (and taxes) follow the phone number so you would not be able to get a plan from Alberta for your BC number.
Hope this helps 😀
Cheers
