February 2020
Considering I'm home watching the kids since school is cancelled (snow day), I have the time to write this post, otherwise I'd have just dropped the matter.
The monthly cost of the phone in the shop/pages is before sales tax.
Yet this is what I saw in my confirmation email
At first impression, it looked like 42.16 crept up sneakily to 48.48 because it is part of the 113.94 total described as "before tax".
I had to call CSR to find out that the 48.48 is the taxed cost of the phone and contrary to what is clearly indicated in the summary of monthly fees, it will not be taxed again. Once I had demystified the summary of fees, I had to do a weird calculation to get to my total cost after tax:
+65.46 (plan)
- 27.17 (discount)
-----------
38.29
x 1.149905 ( add taxes GST&QST)
-----------
44.03
+ 48.48 (phone after tax)
-----------
92.51 total cost with taxes
Why why why? The shop/phone page shows the cost before-tax at 42.16, the "Summary of monthly fees" shows the plan cost before taxes, so why confuse everyone by randomly using the after-tax cost of phone? The calculation is simpler if all numbers are before-tax:
+65.46 (plan)
+42.16 (phone)
- 27.17 (discount)
-----------
80.45
x 1.149905 (GST&QST)
-----------
92.51 total cost with taxes
The result is the same, but nobody gets confused.
Happy snow day!
