iPhone - "Other" usage

I can't seem to get a clear answer on the web to what the "Other" usage is when you plug your iPhone into iTunes and it displays the breakdown of memory (Music, Photos, Apps, Other, Free Space). What is the "Other" usage and what is considered a safe amount? I currently have 0.62 GB of Other.

OTHER: is usually the iPhone OS, Contacts, Calenders, Bookmarks, and other small settings

Have you tried verifying with Apple?  Community members, any ideas?
