Hello. If, for example, I don’t use Fido for several months, how can I make sure that no subscription fee is charged during this time? As far as I understand, I have a contract, and regardless of whether I use the connection or not, funds are written off. Is it possible to switch to prepaid communication?

Hello Anastasiia_T,
Welcome to the community!
Unfortunately, I am not aware of any means to ensure there is no monthly fee. While services are not contractual, the monthly fees would continue on a month-to-month basis. Fido does offer a temporary suspension for a reduced rate on eligible lines. However, you should note that the suspension is now only available for a period of 1 to 6 months. It should also be noted that the monthly fee for the temporary suspension may have increased since that post. It should be further noted that any monthly financing for a device would continue as per normal.
It might be possible to migrate your services to pre-paid. However, if you are financing a device, I believe you would be required to pay the total outstanding balance when changing plan types (see here). You should also note that there is a migration fee for the process. As far as I am aware, that fee is $10 (see here). I understand that link notes being able to do so within the community. However, the situation has now changed since that post. These forums are community-driven and no longer intended as a venue for customer services. There would also be a migration fee to switch back from pre-paid to post-paid when you return to Canada (assuming that was your intention). It should also be mentioned that you would likely not be able to regain your current plan upon return. You would be required to obtain a new in-market plan when you migrate back to post-paid services.
It should also be noted that Fido no longer has a By the Minute or By the Day pre-paid offering. Their current offerings are Monthly, Semi-Annually, or Annually (see here). You can find additional information regarding pre-paid service here.
There are other providers that still offer pay-as-you-go services. However, most prepaid options still have expiration dates. While many providers vary the expiration time depending on the top-up amount, some providers offer 365 days for all of their top-up options. If you want to switch to one of these providers, you will need to ask them to port your number from Fido. Again, upon return to Fido, you would be required to obtain a new in-market plan.
If you wished to temporarily suspend your services, you might be able to do so via your My Account --> View Usage & Manage. From your Dashboard, the option to Manage temporary suspension is near the bottom of the page, under Quick Actions.
As mentioned, you should note this forum is community-driven and not intended as a venue for customer services. We would not have access to customer accounts. In order to migrate your services to pre-paid, you would need to contact customer service. In addition, they can also be contacted via Live Chat, Facebook, or Twitter. Those methods can be accessed via the contact page posted above.
Hope this helps 😀
Cheers
