When I have a voicemail, I get a text message with an attached file Attach.amr.  That format has not been supported by Apple for a while, and now it will not open at all.  Why is Fido using a deprecated format?  When will this be changed?

Hello Ferrini,

It is unfortunate Apple decided to no longer support that format. However, adaptive multi-rate (.amr) audio is the standard speech format adopted by 3GPP for voice recordings for cellular networks (see here and here). While it may be true that there have not been any recent releases to that format, it is the codec the industry still uses. Until a new standard gets adopted by 3GPP, I don't think it's likely any of the mobile providers would independently change the format.

I do not know why Apple chose to not support that format. However, there are apps which may be able to play those file formats:

iOS users can use apps like VLC for Mobile, nPlayer, or OPlayer ~taken from link above

Hope this helps 😀
