how do i ensure i do not have to pay this bill, irrespective of fido stating they will refund me? i do not wish to have fido hold on to my money for the month...

If the bill was generated before you cancelled the service, it would be required to pay it as usual.

We'll then send you a final invoice with credits for the days the service was cancelled. 

 

You can always wait for the final bill to come before making your payment, but this would likely generate late payment fees
