Fido modem/router replacement

Currently, my Fido rental modem/router is approximately 8 years old.  When should it be replaced?

@FidoJonathan Thanks for getting back to me.  How do I know when the modem begins to malfunction?  Are there signs and symptoms?

 

Also, does Fido update the modem's software and firmware over-the-air or do I need to do this?  I would like to ensure that security updates and patches have been applied.
