Hi, has anyone been able to travel leaving Cellular on but Cellular Roaming off to see callers and texters since that's free and not replying because that would be a $15 daily charge abroad?

Hello Vkrikorian2,

Firstly, when you refer to Travelling with diff SIM, are you intending on using a dual-SIM capable device or replacing the Fido SIM? You should note that if it's the latter, you won't be able to receive any calls or text messages without your Fido SIM active. However, it you refer to the former, you should note that there is no standardisation as to how dual-SIMs function. Some manufacturers might offer the ability to completely disable a SIM. Alternatively, they might allow certain usage to one SIM over the other. You would need to set those settings accordingly.

Yes, as mentioned in my previous reply, merely receiving SMS should not incur roaming charges. In addition, unanswered incoming calls and having them go to voicemail should also not incur roaming charges. However, it should also be mentioned that the Voicemail-to-text feature notifications would be sent as MMS (roaming data). Similarly, I believe iPhone's Visual Voicemail would use data (roaming, if abroad).  Even if the text message received is SMS, if your device is configured to provide Delivery and/or Read receipts, those would be sent as SMS or data and considered roaming usage.

I assume you refer to celluar data enabled and roaming data disabled. I personally have been able to receive calls and messages with data and roaming data disabled without incurring roaming charges. However, a customer's experience would be dependent on device. It should be noted that disabling those settings does not prevent roaming for voice and messaging. In addition, some manufacturers might allow some data usage to occur despite those settings (see here). I do understand disabling both data and roaming data is not your intention, however, if some phones allow data usage with with data disabled, a similar issue with unintended roaming data could occur with data enabled.

That's why it is also generally recommended to enable Airplane and/or Flight modes in order to prevent unplanned roaming usage. You could then manually enable Wifi when required. However, with dual-SIM devices that setting would affect both SIMs. I don't think enabling Airplane or Flight mode on your device would be an option as it would also affect your local SIM, if that was your intent. In addition, you would not be able to receive calls or SMS on your Fido SIM.

The mobile providers only know usage. They do not know what settings may or may not have been enabled on a customer's device. If there is usage occurring when customers do not believe their devices should be able to do so, that usage would still incur charges. Customers would need to know how their devices behave abroad. If you wish to receive calls and SMS, there is unfortunately no absolute guarantee your device won't use other services and trigger roaming charges.

As also mentioned in my previous reply, if you did not wish to use Fido Roam, you would need to opt-out of the service. In doing so, any usage abroad would be on a pay-per-use basis. You can view those rates here.

 Hope this helps 😀

Cheers
