Important changes to mobile networks in the U.S. that may impact your roaming service on select devices.
Hey Community,
As of February 2022, all major U.S. carriers have begun shutting down their 3G/HSPA wireless network service within the U.S. (including Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands).
How could this affect your service?
Fido Postpaid Customers
The US 3G/HSPA network shutdown will only affect a small number of phones that don’t support 4G LTE data and Voice over Long-Term Evolution (VoLTE) roaming.
Customers with an affected device will no longer be able to make or receive calls (including 911 calls), send or receive text messages or use cellular data while in the US (including Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands).
At this time, Fido customers with devices that rely on the 3G/HSPA wireless network may notice significantly reduced coverage while roaming.
You will still be able to use your device normally within Canada.
For a list of devices not impacted by the shutdown and for more info, check out US 3G/HSPA NETWORKS SHUTTING DOWN: FAQS.
If your device is affected by the US 3G/HSPA network shutdown and you’d still like to use your services while travelling in the US, you’ll need to upgrade to a device that’s 4G LTE data and VoLTE roaming capable.
You can upgrade your device online or contact us if you need help.
Fido Prepaid Customers
As of February 2022, anyone with a Fido Prepaid service is no longer able to make or receive calls (including 911 calls), send or receive text messages or use cellular data while in the US.
Fido Prepaid service is not VoLTE roaming capable, therefore upgrading to a new device will not enable the device to roam in the U.S.
You can still use your device normally within Canada.
If you’d like to use talk, text and data services while travelling in the US, you’ll need to have a device that supports VoLTE roaming and 4G LTE data and to switch to one of our monthly postpaid plans or contact us so we can help find the best plan for your needs.
