When I try to set up voicemail I get a message to enter my 10 digit phone number and press the # key then I get a message telling me that this is an invalid number.

This would usually mean that Voicemail isn't added to your plan. This can happen when you haven't activated after a certain period. We can definitely fix this if you reach out over these methods.
