Xiaomi Poco M3 and 4G

Hi, I currently own a Xiaomi Poco M3 and cannot connect to Fido's 4G network. I recently purchased a new sim card and that did not change anything. I see 4G appearing on my phone but as soon as I place a call, it switches to 3G. In addition, I used my friend's sim card (also a Fido customer) and 4G worked and I saw "VOLTE" at the top of the phone's screen, confirming compatibility.

Can you tell me what the issue is? I contacted Fido support and did not get a clear answer. I need a solution because every time an outgoing call is made with my sim card, I hear a message saying that the call was made using the 3G network that will expire July 31st, 2025, and then the call is placed. I do NOT get this message when placing a call with my friend's sim card.

Thank you! Paul

Thank you for a very informative and detailed reply. For some reason, after testing again and putting my simcard back, VOLTE is somehow working and has for the past 7 hours. Let's see what happens next.

Thanks again.

Hello Pkotcho,

  Welcome to the community!

Unfortunately, I'm not sure whether there is currently a solution to your situation. However, I might be able to shed some light as to the issue you are experiencing.

As far as I can tell, that device does contain some compatible LTE (4G) bands/frequencies (see here and here). So, as you were able to demonstrate, the device is able to connect to that network. However, Fido traditionally have not supported certain services (ie voLTE and/or Wifi-calling etc) on devices or versions of devices they do not sell. Though, that does not necessarily mean people had to purchase from Fido. Fido sells the same Canadian versions of devices as the other Canadian mobile providers as well as local box stores etc. As long as the device was the same version as the one they sold, it was possible for those services to be supported.

On the other hand, non-Canadian versions of devices (ie US or Global Samsung S series etc) would likely not be supported for those services. In addition, other devices from manufacturers which are not generally sold from Fido or Canadian mobile providers (ie Xiaomi, OnePlus, Oppo, etc) are also likely not to be supported for those services (see here, here, here, here. etc).

Without voLTE, calls and text messages (SMS and/or MMS) would fall-back to the '3G' network. I do understand that the device is able to use voLTE when you use your friend's SIM card. It's likely they use a device supported for those features. However, it's possible those features would be removed if you continually used their SIM card.

As mentioned in some of the other posts, I understand that once the '3G' network is decommissioned, limiting voLTE to only Canadian versions of devices  or devices they sell will be problematic for other device users. Unfortunately, I am not aware of any plans to support those features on other devices.

Hope this helps 😀

Cheers
