Although this thread is quite old, I'd like to add a little update since I came across it 
Android phones use Adobe Reader to open images therefore for such error messages you need to make sure it is updated to the latest version. In case it is and such error messages still occur, then a factory reset should clean up phone's softaware and make sure in fact the software is not corrupted.
It was not specified though whether webdrifters had errors when receiving MMS from the same person or it was from multiple friends...Maybe the files were really corrupted???....Mistery...
