Setting up voice, it won't

I have accessed voice mail by pressing and holding the 1 key for 3 seconds. It then asks me for my phone number followed by the pound sign. It then says it does not recognize the phone number entered.

So I can not set up the voice mail.

  That said, it sounds like they might need to reset your voicemail on your line. If you would like assistance with setting up your voicemail, you would need to contact customer service.
