There are a few troubleshooting steps that can be followed in these situations:
- resetting the network settings
- turning on airplane mode for a few minutes
- removing the SIM card and inserting it back in the phone
- manually searching for the network

I ended up using my laptop and connecting on Fido live chat.
After an hour of trying all this, the thing that worked was, put it on airplane mode, turn off mobile data, and turn off the phone, then do it in reverse.
it worked for a while, but I had to do it again later.
So, far today, no problems, but I keep checking it now.
Thanks for your reply, but I am surprised that it seems to be a Microsoft style fix, shut off and restart!! LOL!
