I wanted to switch to a different service provider. Can anybody provide some information on how to do it.

Welcome to the community!
If you would like to switch to a new provider and keep your number when you register with the new provider you just let them know you would like to port your number.
They will ask you for the necessary information to port the number over, once the port has been completed it will automatically cancel the Fido line.
You should not you need to keep the Fido line active until the port completes if you cancel the Fido line before then you will lose your number.
