October 11th, National Coming Out Day, is an annual 2SLGBTQ+ awareness day to support anyone "Coming Out of the Closet." Having been first celebrated in the United States in 1988, by founders Rob Eichberg and Jean O'Leary, it is a day to bring much needed awareness to a time that can be scary, stressful and an important time for those part of the Community.
The term "Coming Out of the Closet" often refers to individuals who are apart of the 2SLGBTQ+ Community who feel like they must hide who they truly are due to judgement. Coming out is when a person can acknowledge their true identity by sharing it with those they trust and care about.
Hiding who you truly are can feel like carrying around a heavy weight. Coming out is a way to release that heavy burden. It takes a tremendous amount of courage and strength to present who you really are and that you are proud of your identity.
Let this day be a reminder to always love yourself. Remember to be authentically and unapologetically yourself, always.
