Received suspicious calls for offering 30%-40% off of my current plan

I received calls from these two weeks, claiming they are agents from Rogers and Fido. They said they could offer me 30% -40% off of my current plan.

For the first call, I said that I was busy, so just sent an email to your registered email address at Rogers/Fido. That man said okay and hung up the phone.

The second call I received asked me for my email address, and I said if you're from Rogers or Fido, you should have my contact email on file. The man said he's from a different department, so he didn't have it.

I strongly feel this is a new scam but I don't have much patience to hear how they can get me the discount or which personal info they need from me. If anyone received a similar call, please let me know if this is truly a scam. Thanks!

Ya, so, I'm the **bleep** that fell for this scam. Long story short, they hacked into my Fido account and ordered a second phone line and a new device. I was able to stop this, but it was too easy. The hardware was being sent to my correct address so what would they gain? Another thing that's been happening is that since the hack, I've been getting HUNDREDS of phone calls from area code 647. Anyone that I've spoken to or have responded to their text, they claim that my number has contacted them first. One guy sent me a screenshot with my number on it! If hundreds of people are returning my calls, how many calls are actually going out? So my phone rings every 10 seconds now, and Fido tech support says they can't help me. I can change my number for $70 and days of work. That's it. Thanks Fido.

Anyway, my point is: since ordering hardware and a new line doesn't really benefit the scammers, what is their long game here? Do they have more in mind and the Fido hack was just a distraction? And the endless phone calls??? This is freaking me out, I have to admit.

Hello Maplepower2,

  Welcome to the community!

Sorry to hear your account had been hacked. Glad to hear you were able to cancel the order and second phone line when you did, though.

Unfortunately, there have been many SCAMs going on recently. One particular SCAM involves the scammers calling customers and informing they have a promotion on a certain device. After getting enough details to order a device, they notify the customer that they made a mistake and ordered the wrong device and tell customers to return the device providing an return address. However, the address they provide for the return is not that from Fido. For an example, see here

While your situation might not have been exactly the same as the one outlined above, it's possible they might try to resort to a similar method of obtaining the device. If you are required to return a device, make sure you contact Fido customer support directly in order to obtain proper information regarding its return.

With regards to the SPAM calls, it's possible the two might not be related. I understand it can be upsetting to have received calls from people thinking you've been calling them. The calls are scammers or spammers using spoofed numbers. In your cases, they happen to have spoofed your phone number. Unfortunately, there isn't much providers can do to prevent SPAM calls. As you are aware, the numbers shown on caller ID do not belong to the spammers. They often belong to innocent, unsuspecting people -- such as yourself. Unfortunately, there isn't much that can be done to prevent numbers from being spoofed. Even the RCMP are not immune to being spoofed (see here, here, etc).

Rest assured that it is unlikely your phone number has been hacked. While they may have been able to gain access to your account, it's not possible to make/receive calls or send/receive text messages without your SIM (physical or eSIM). All phone numbers -- whether landline or mobile -- are in databases which are readily available online. Certain prefixes are designated as landlines, others as Rogers, Fido, Bell, etc. All a spammer/scammer needs to do is have a computer sequentially dial the numbers of a desired area code/prefix combination from 0000 to 9999 and all of those customers would be with their desired target (see here). The spammers/scammers will often pick a phone number within that area code/prefix to spoof.

That said, one possible concern might be SIM-swap fraud. That SCAM involves scammers porting your number to another service without your permission. That's why many providers now require port request verification (usually via text to current SIM) prior to number porting. If you are still able to make/receive calls and/or send/receive text messages, you would still have control of your SIM and phone line.

Hope this helps 😀

Cheers

I got a call from random numbers but mostly starting with 586 621 XXXX. (the last 4 being random). I had given them my email id and got a weird email of a free apple watch 3 and stuff like that and it came from fido@salesdepartment.ca. I felt it was sus as soon as they asked for my full name and phone number. They kept calling me till today and I just told them they can take their scam somewhere else. I really don't know what they are trying to archieve but soo many calls are just annoying. Beware guys!

Hello Calvinpovo20,

  Welcome to the community!

Thanks for your precautionary tale! I think everyone is frustrated with all of the SCAM calls going around.

I think one of the goals of those SCAM calls is to collect information and possibly gain access to your account. The more information the can collect, the greater the possibility they can access a customers' account. Unfortunately, once a customer's account is compromised, scammers can make unauthorised device purchases and have them sent to their address. Alternatively, they can have the devices sent to the customer and have them return the devices to a fraudulent address.

The unfortunate reality is that customer information is big money. Even if the scammers do not intend on using the collected information for themselves, they can sell the information to other nefarious characters.

Hope this helps 😀

Cheers

I just got a call from these guys too. They said they were from my mobile carrier and would like to offer me 30% off my next bill. Are you interested? Of course yes. They said, "I just have a few questions, who is your mobile carrier Fido or Rogers? How much do you pay a month?" Then asked for my email address. So I said, "sorry, where are you calling from again? Don't you have my email on file?" They said, "we don't have that information as we are from the promotional department". I know the departments don't necessarily talk to each other, but even so, it felt fishy. I said I'm very busy please call me back in a few hours. Then found this thread. Checked my mobile app and no offers were there either. They called back 30 min later and I said , "I'm actually not interested, thanks " he said, "may I ask what changed your mind?" I replied, "I looked out up online and looks like your offer is just a scam also there was no offer available in my app." Then he hung up on me.

Hi- I just received a similar call.  If, indeed, Roger/Fido is offering 30-40% to retain cutomers, I should not have to fill a form over the day.  I asked to have the form email to me and the caller simply hang up on me.

Obliviously a scam call!!!

Hi Seraphin, I got the same call, offered me 30% off with Apple Watch to loyal customer. Be aware they ask you email, first last name, don't give them 4 digits of your account number.

Today I got a call claiming they are from Rogers offering 40% discount on the current plan. They already knew my name, and the 2nd cell number in my account, later asked email address, account number, and mailing address and later to merge the account from Fido to Rogers were asking password of my fido account. I just hang-up later and blocked the number as no one will ask for Password.

Fido and Rogers should protect customer data. Because they had some of my info and I almost fell for this spam.  The biggest catch is the call number display showed "Rogers Communication".  Please be careful.

Got a call just now and also telling me I can get 40% discount.  They said they will email me the discount form after verifying questions.  Asked my mame which I hesitantly give.  But when they asked me about my DOB then I told them I will not provide my DOB and email address.  I dont care if I don't get a discount if this is not a scam, I told them to send me email about your promotion then I hung up.  Very suspicious indeed.

I got a call last night too. I was offered $25/month and a new iPhone 15 Pro. I told them I don't need a new phone so it was suggested that after it's sent to me, I just return it. It all didn't make sense - the phone was part of the promotion but I could just give it back and keep the lower plan? I was told I'll have to provide my name, DOB, email, Fido account number etc. That's when I told them to email me the offer and gave them my junk mail address. The email looks somewhat legit but also doesn't make a lot of sense. I was put on hold while he was sending the email so I just hung up. @Cebuana1975 did you get the email?

@Kat_ I did not get an email so far.

Hood for you @Cebuana1975 , fido will never call you and ask those questions for something they are offering you. You would get an email or text to let you know to check your app or online account. Even if it was legit, you were right to hang up
