Phone number spoofed

I received a call from someone who said I just called them...I didn't. It's not the first time this has happened. Is there a way to prevent someone from spoofing my phone number? Thank you

Unfortunately, there is no way to stop someone from spoofing a number as of yet.

No provider or number is immune to number spoofing, the carriers are working on a new technology STIR/SHAKEN (Secure Telephone Identity Revisited/Signature-based Handling of Asserted Information Using Tokens) to combat this number spoofing. 

It was supposed to be implemented by September 2020 but according to this article here, the providers are saying that very few people would actually have phones that would benefit from it and wants to push it to 2022.
