Deleting Voice Messages - they are being saved, not deleted when I press 77

To delete my voice messages, I press 77.  That is not working.  Instead of being deleted, when I press 77 my voice messages are becoming saved messages.  How can I delete all the messages that are piling up in saved messages?

Do you dial 77 directly during the playback to erase your voicemail immediately?
