... or is it possible to have a subscription without being in a 2yr contract and so being able to opt out at anytime without having cancellation fees? My phone is already paid up and I am thinking of changing my plan. Thx

Welcome to the community!

Only if you want to finance a phone through Fido then you will have to take a contract, if you have a compatible device already then you can just take the plan and cancel at any time without incurring any fees.
