wi-fi email and bbm and other apps

I just acquired Blackberry Curve for son prinmarily for texting, but assumed he could use data features when home using wi-fi.  Now discover he can't set up email, can't use BBM, can't use facebook app, although browser does on Wi-Fi.

Why won't other stuff work,  Has Fido locked it out.  Did I pick wronng provider, as this stuff should work!

BBM only works if you subscribe to a Blackberry data plan through your provider', even if u want to use it wifi only, the only way to provision access to it is if its on your line. otherwise it wont work.
