FIDO 3G Shutdown. Will my phone work?

I got the usual email saying that the 3g shutdown will happen and my current phone is incompatible. I have Redmi Note 13 Pro 5G and it has the VoLTE toggle on. Similar with others, Xiaomi/Redmi is not a popular north american brand, so i just want to clarify if my phone is good to go or if i'll be needing a new one. I just got my phone last new year and its a little bit of waste to buy new one.

Thanks for the help!

Hello Fmsm,

Welcome to the community!

Firstly, you should note that these forums are community-driven and not intended as a venue for customer services. We may not be aware of all Fido policies.

I understand your device might be LTE-capable (and even 5G-capable). However, the issue is not necessarily the device not being able to access the LTE (4G) network. In fact, since the device appears to have compatible LTE bands/frequencies, it should be able to access data on that network. Unfortunately, though, the device may likely remain reliant on the '3G' network for calls and text messaging.

I also understand voLTE may be enabled on your device. However, you should note that Fido traditionally have not supported certain services (ie voLTE and/or Wifi-calling etc) on devices or versions of devices they do not sell. Though, that does not necessarily mean people had to purchase from Fido. Fido sells the same Canadian versions of devices as the other Canadian mobile providers as well as local box stores etc. As long as the device was the same version as the one they sold, it was possible for those services to be supported.

On the other hand, non-Canadian versions of devices (ie US or Global Samsung S series etc) would likely not be supported for those services. In addition, other devices from manufacturers which are not generally sold from Fido or Canadian mobile providers (ie Xiaomi, OnePlus, Oppo, etc) are also likely not to be supported for those services (see here, here, here, here. etc).

Without voLTE, calls and/or messages would necessarily fall-back to the '3G' network. Unfortunately, Fido/Rogers intends on decommissioning the UMTS/WCDMA network July 2025. After the '3G' sunset, you would likely not be able to use that device for calls or text messaging.

If you have received that email, it's likely your device is not currently supported for voLTE and is still using the '3G' network for calls and messaging. I believe that email is only being sent to those devices still using that network for calls and messaging.

I understand that once the '3G' network is decommissioned, limiting voLTE to only Canadian versions of devices they sell will be problematic for other device users. However, I do not know if, or when, they might allow voLTE and/or Wifi-calling support for non-Fido (non-Canadian version) devices.

Hope this helps 😀

Cheers

Thanks for the reply, Cawtau!
So im exploring my options now for the cheapest affordable smartphone to replace my current one. I saw that in Fido website that the Motorola Moto G Play 2024 was one of the cheapest and it says its VoLTE compatible. Im asking your expertise/opinion, will that work after the 3g Shutdown?

Hello again,

As far as I can tell, given the available specifications, that device should continue to work for calls and text messaging once the '3G' network has been decommissioned. As you note, it does appear to be voLTE-capable and certified to be supported on the network.

You might consider purchasing the device directly from Fido, though. To be clear, I'm not trying to promote the sale of devices from Fido. Full disclosure: I did not purchase my device from Fido. Rather, I purchased my current device direct from Samsung Canada. I know it's the same model version as sold from Fido.

Unfortunately, I'm not as familiar with Motorola devices as I am with others (ie Samsung). As far as I am aware, there may be different versions depending on region:

I do not know whether the device purchased elsewhere would be the same version as the one Fido sells. In addition, if for some reason, the device does not appear to work after the '3G' shutdown, it could be argued that voLTE on the device should be supported since it was purchased from Fido.

Hope this helps 😀

Cheers

This was sent to me:

"Effective Jun‌e 3‌0, 20‌25, if you have still not transitioned to an upgraded network, a one-time $75 3G administrative charge will be applied to your account"

Hello Wanman,

As mentioned in my reply to Fmsm's post above, you have likely received that email if your device is reliant on the '3G' network for calls and messages. What device are you using? Was it available from Fido?

Unfortunately, if your device is not supported for voLTE, it may not continue to work for calls and messaging after the '3G' network gets decommisioned.

Hope this helps 😀
