Hi there

I am abroad right now. And got the dreaded "FIDO ROAM" welcome  email indicating i would be charged 14$ per day.  So i took out my FIDO sim altogether.  Will i still be charged ?

Thank you in advance

Hello Donbox5,

  Welcome to the community!

Just to clarify what FidoSaira mentioned previously:

@FidoSaira wrote:...Fido Roam is only charged when an outgoing usage is made...

The Fido Roam charge will incur when you use your device to make or receive a call, send a text message or use data while abroad. So answering an incoming call would also incur the Fido Roam charge. While receiving SMS would not incur the roaming charge, it's worth mentioning that the data contained within MMS (incoming or outgoing) would be considered roaming data and charged accordingly. You should note that MMS are not solely restricted to pictures or video messages. Messages with subject headers or group messages etc are also considered MMS.

You might consider disabling any MMS auto-retrieve settings on your phone. You would then receive a SMS notifying of a MMS (no charge) but the data contained would not download automatically. You could then choose whether or not to download the associated data contents. You should also note that, with the exception of Wifi-calling, MMS does not generally get transmitted via Wifi. Downloading MMS while connected to Wifi would likely incur roaming charges. That said, if your device is supported for Wifi-calling, some types of usage would be considered roaming.

Removing your SIM would prevent your device from connecting to the networks so it would not be possible to use any of your services (ie no roaimg charges). A word of caution, though... the SIMs are rather easy to lose. If you do require a new SIM when you return, you will likely be required to purchase your replacement.

Hope this helps 😀

Hey @donbox5

Welcome to the Community!

Fido Roam is only charged when an outgoing usage is made. We will validate all usage via your Fido sim card. If no usage is detected, rest assured there will be no charge. You can always keep your phone on airplane mode or take out the sim card until your return. That's what I do when I travel! 😊

The information provided in the reference links you've posted above is absolutely correct.
