Voicemail set up - Says my number is invalid and gives no option to set up

I am trying to access my voicemail, I call it (by pressing and holding 1) and it only gives one option to enter in my 10 digit phone number followed the the pound key. I do this, I enter the phone number associated to my account, and it says it is invalid. It gives no other options to set up voicemail. Please help.
