Roaming service when SIM card is out

I specifically pulled the Fido SIM card prior to travelling. When I landed abroad, I plugged in my foreign SIM card and turned off the airplane mode. Later on I received an email confirming that I was registered on a roaming network. I will not accept this as I did not use this service.

I need an explaination and solution to this and I will not accept this bill, it's a 100% disappointment.

Hi @XH01

You received this message via email and text message because your phone connected to a foreign network outside Canada. It doesn't necessarily mean that you are getting charge. Indeed, it is free to connect to a foreign network. You would only get charge if there is usage done. Here's a list of usage types that would trigger a fee.

- Placing an outgoing call or answering an incoming call.

- Sending text messages or multimedia messages (Receiving remains free while roaming abroad)

- Using mobile data

- Using Wifi Calling

If you don't plan on using the service while travelling, we suggest you make sure that the data while roaming feature is off in the settings of your phone. If you prefer, we can also disable roaming on your account. Please contact us here for further assistance.

If the data while roaming setting is off, you don't answer any incoming calls or make a call (and that includes checking the voicemail and certain type of wifi calling) and that you don't send any outgoing text messages, you shouldn't be charged roaming.
