I’m writing to clarify and document my situation regarding a cancelled Fido account and the current collection activity by MetCredit.

I was using a Fido mobile number while I was in Canada, but I’ve since moved back to India. I missed terminating my account. My account was cancelled due to non-payment during that time. Recently, I noticed that although my account is marked as "cancelled" in the Fido app, it still shows an outstanding bill under my name, and the app gives me the option to pay it directly.

Meanwhile, I’ve also been contacted by MetCredit, which claims they were hired by Fido to collect the outstanding balance. They are now asking for payment and have mentioned additional charges and interest (even up to 41%). They’ve also requested proof of payment if I decide to pay Fido directly instead of through them.

Here are my questions and concerns:

  1. If I pay the outstanding balance through the Fido app directly:

    • Will that be considered as a valid and complete payment of the debt?

    • Will the account remain cancelled (I do not wish to reactivate it)?

    • Will MetCredit stop contacting me after I send them proof of payment?

  2. Why am I still able to view and pay the balance through the Fido app if the account is already cancelled?

  3. Is there a way to get written confirmation from Fido that:

    • The account is cancelled permanently,

    • Payment through the app settles the file fully,

    • And no services will be reactivated without my consent?

I want to make sure that once this is paid, I won’t be contacted again or have my account reopened unknowingly.

Please assist me in resolving this matter properly. I am happy to pay what I owe, but I want to do so in the right and safest way, and without extra charges or confusion from third parties.

Thank you

Hello Isahilbhanushal,

Welcome to the community!

Sorry to hear of your situation. You should note that these forums are community-driven and not intended as a venue for customer services. We may not be able to speak to all Fido policies regarding your situaiton.

As far as I am aware, now that your debt has already been sent to MetCredit, you should only deal with them and not Fido anymore as it could create confusion (see here). I understand they mentioned providing proof of payment if the payment had already been made. However, I assume that would be for payments made to Fido prior to the debt getting sent to a debt collector.

While the account may have been cancelled due to non-payment, there is still a balance you owe. Cancellation of the account does not erase any owed debts. Even if customers voluntarily cancel their services, they would still be responsible for outstanding balances on the account.

If you would like to discuss your matter with Fido, you would need to contact customer service. Unfortunately, they appear to have removed their customer service via social media options. I understand you are currently outside of Canada. They do provide a number to call From Abroad. I believe you should also be able to call that number collect from a landline (see here).

Hope this helps 😀
