Home line - drop call

My home phone works great except when a second line comes in, I go to take the call and the person who I put on hold ends up getting dropped. Any suggestions?

That's definitely not supposed to happen. 

Can you check if your call waiting option is enabled on your phone? 

To check, please dial *43# from your handset. 

At that point, you should get a pop up letting you know if the option is enabled. 

Also, please make sure that there is no unconditional forwarding active by having dialing ##21 from your device.
