Hello,
I signed up for Fido Home Phone years ago for my senior mother. Recently we've been getting a pre-recorded message whenever we make a call from the home phone, saying Fido's 3G network will be discontinued in July 2025, and that I need to contact Fido.
I've been to a Fido store in person, talked to a Fido customer service specialist over the phone, and even got transferred to Rogers migration team. They either can't offer me any other options as Fido no longer offers home phone or they have no clue what is going on (Rogers side).
I've found some online sellers who carry the ZTE wireless home phone adapter. So my plan is to ask Fido to change the soon-to-be phased out 3G SIM to an LTE SIM.
My questions are:
1. Will I be able to keep the old number (that I used as home phone number) when it ports to the LTE network as a mobile number?
2. Is there a department at Rogers that actually handles home phone services? Or would I have to reach out to Shaw?
Thank you in advance.

Hello LT_tanpopo,
Welcome to the community!
Firstly, you should note these forums are community-driven and not intended as a venue for customer services. We do not have access to customers' accounts. We would not know what has been previously discussed. In addition, we would not necessarily know the fate all of their services.
That said, as far as I am aware, Fido appears to still offer the Wireless Home Phone service (see here and here). In addition, their contact page still appears to include Home Phone (see here). Aside: I understand her phone number is for a Home Phone service, however, it would also be considered a mobile number because the service is wireless.
If you (and she) are receiving that message while using her phone, it's possible her wireless home adapter might not be LTE-capable. I believe the ZTE WF723 adapter does support LTE.
Depending on when your mother first started her home phone service, it could be using a '3G' SIM. However, it could also have been a LTE-capable SIM in a non-LTE adapter.
If Fido does still offer the Wireless Home Phone service, you could trial her old SIM in a new adapter. If she still encounters that same message in a LTE-capable adapter, switching the SIM card may be required. If that is the case, you would need to contact customer service and have them update the SIM card information on her account with a new LTE-capable SIM. Doing so would not be considered a port and not affect her phone number.
On the other hand, if you did wish to change providers, The other provider would need to request the porting of her phone number over from Fido.
I understand the number included in that contact page appears to be the same as the regular customer service number. Their Wireless Home Phone page provides a different number to call for purchase. It's possible that number may also be able to provide assistance with your matter.
Hope this helps 😀
Cheers

Hello, just thought I should give an update 😊 I received the ZTE WF723 today so I was finally able to test your method and it worked! My mother's home phone service was activated in 2015, so the SIM is LTE capable. When I popped the SIM into the WF273, it connected to the 3G network at first. The device seemed to be stuck on 3G after I tried ejecting and reinserting the SIM, and also restarting the device. However, after about 30 min, it automatically switched to LTE. And the "3G is retiring" message is gone when I did a test call. Glad I was able to save some money because you reminded me the SIM might be LTE capable, thanks again 🙏🏻

I'm in the same situation as you and I'm tempted to do the same and just buy the device from a reseller.
I've called the 3G transition team and they're telling me I have to move the line to Rogers (I don't have an account) and that the $13 plan I have will have to swap to a $20 plan. I'd much rather just buy the device and keep using it on Fido with the cheaper plan if the SIM card will work in it. I'm just worried that the Fido home phone plan will be discontinued on the 3G end date.
If anyone has any helpful knowledge, please share.

Hello Magnumforce44,
Welcome to the community!
As mentioned in the solution, these forums are community-driven and not intended as a venue for customer services. we would not necessarily know the fate all of their services.
To be honest, I don't know whether Fido plans to discontinue the Home Phone. However, the website still appears to offer the Wireless Home Phone service (see link from previous post). That said, you still may need to switch to a newer Home Phone plan as they no longer appear to offer the $13 plan you currently have.
If you would like to discuss your matter your situation, you would need to contact customer service.
Hope this helps 😀

Thanks for the reply.
I've called the transition team five times since early April and none of them seem to know what's going on -- some don't even know what a home phone is.
There's a stock issue with the ZTE WF723 and they have no idea when it's coming back in. They just keep saying to call back every two weeks. When it's in, I'm supposed to get it for free and my number will be ported to Rogers to change to the $20 plan.
I just got an email from Fido that I'll be charged $75 if I don't take action and upgrade my device by July 1. So I just took matters into my own hands and ordered an unlocked ZTE WF723 off a reseller today.
Like you pointed out, Fido still offers the home phone on their website. I hope I can just swap the SIM once I get the new device and keep using it indefinitely on Fido with my $13 plan. Fingers crossed I guess. I'm optimistic after a previous poster pointed out that the 3G message went away when he swapped the SIM with the ZTE WF723.
I am extremely disappointed with the way Rogers/Fido have handled this as it's been way more work than it should have been.

Update:
I got my ZTE WF723CA brand new from a reseller, put in my SIM card, and it worked. I don't know what the "CA" stands for but I'm assuming this means a Canadian edition? I hope so.
3G message is gone when I call now. It was connected to 3G initially but transferred to LTE after about 15 mins. It has stayed on LTE permanently since.
I still get a popup on Fido.ca saying that I need to upgrade my device, but perhaps that will go away eventually. Hopefully this nightmare is over.
