Hey everyone, I’m looking for some recommendations on improving my internet setup. Right now, I’m with Fido on their Internet 150 (Unlimited) plan, paying $67/month (before discounts) with a CGN3 Wi-Fi Modem rental ($8/month). My speed test results are a bit inconsistent:
I mostly use the internet for gaming, streaming, and browsing, and I feel like my connection could be better. I’m weighing a few options and would love some input:
:keycap_1: Upgrade My Router – I’m thinking about replacing my current modem with the XBMC7. Do I need to go through Fido for this, or can I just switch it myself? Would this actually improve my speeds and stability?
:keycap_2: Better Plan for the Same Price? – Does Fido (or any other provider) offer a better plan around $67/month that would improve performance for gaming and streaming? If you’ve negotiated a better deal with them, how did you do it?
:keycap_3: Switching Providers – I’ve heard good things about Oxio. Are they a good alternative? Are there other providers that offer a more reliable connection for gaming/streaming around the same price point?
I’d really appreciate any recommendations or experiences—especially if you’ve been in a similar situation. Thanks in advance

Hello @GluvHudson,
Welcome to the community!
Do you mean your internet is with Rogers? Fido stopped providing home internet in May 2024 and switched everyone who wanted to stay over to Rogers.
To do a real speed test you will need to do it by cable, not WiFi if the speed is not good after testing with a cable you can ask if they would switch out the modem and see if it helps. Unfortunately, you can not use your own modem you can however use your own router.
As for price wise in my opinion you are over paying, i'm getting 1.5GB for $50 and i've seen others get that cheaper depending on the area you live in.
