iphone 4s canceling data

hi, i'm planning to renew my contract with an upgrade to an iphone 4s in a couple of days and since i'm not a big data user, i was wondering if its possible to cancel my data a month or two after my contract is renewed. i heard you can do that but with a $200 cancellation fee but is that still the case now?

Hey everyone!

Although this thread is quite old, I'd like to add a little update since I came across it Smiley

Conditions for phone subsidies and downgrade have changed since last post in this thread, you can find the new information here.

Hope it helps!

Cheers

It's not $200 anymore. They take the amount of the discount you received, subtract $50 as the voice cancelation portion, and divide the rest by 36 months. Then the amount you owe when you cancel data is the total discount minus $50, minus the number of months into your contract.

For the iPhone 4S it would be
$650 retail price
-$160 amount you pay
=$490
Then
$490
-$50 voice cancelation fee
=$440 data cancelation fee
$440 is the amount to cancel data in the first month

$440/36= $12.23 so if you cancel after one month you data cancelation fee is
$440-$12.22=$427.78 and so on

so the cost to cancel data after the first month would be $427.78? the cancelation fee is only a one time thing right?

One time charge. Verify actual amounts at the time you are doing the upgrade.

is it the same for Manitoba?

i'd like to do what we did with my wifes iPHone 4.  pay $359 for it ($159 subsidized price, +$200 no data penalty) and just sign a voice/text plan.

or, can i purchaed the iPhone 5 at the subsidized price, switch to a voice/text plan and pay a lower penatly.

i know there are new laws for MB (manitoba), but i'm not 100% clear on  how they work.

i'd gladly sign on for another few years, but do NOT want a $60/mth data plan.  i like my $25 retention plan, but need to upgrade to a new iphone from the old 3G

Those are approximate numbers but u get the idea.
