Sending and Receiving MMS without data plan

Hello,

My fido plan states that I have Unlimited text, picture and video messages from Canada to Canadian, U.S and international wireless numbers.  However, when I allowed data usage on my phone to send an MMS, I received a text message from fido stating that my phone is trying to connect to the internet.

I don't have a data plan.  Does this mean that I can send and receive MMS without paying any additional fees or am I paying for data even though my plan includes unlimited picture and video messages?

Any help appreciated

Thanks

Hey Imaginaerum,

You will not be charged for data on a pay per use basis. In order to send and receive MMS, data does, indeed, need to be enabled in your phone settings.

You're receiving the notification that your phone's trying to connect because data was enabled, and it's most likely trying to update apps, weather, etc. You'd only be able to access the internet via our network if you add a data pass or add-on.

I hope this helps.

Hi Stephen, thanks for the information. Can you confirm for sure that what you have said is correct?

Not to doubt you, but I was just on the phone with a Fido representative who suggested that I should only enable data when I want to send an MMS message, then turn it off again. She seemed to think that once data is enabled it could start being used by other apps and so on. Obviously I don't want to start getting extra charges for data usage, but it's inconvenient to turn it on and off all the time. I like your answer better than what I was told on the phone, so just want to make sure that's correct!

If it makes a difference, I'm in Vancouver, BC, and I'm actually asking on behalf of my daughter.

Many thanks!

I confirm the information my colleague Stephen provided is indeed accurate. Pay-per-use data within Canada is not possible. Access to data via our network is only granted once a data service is active on the consumer's account.

If you keep mobile data ON in the settings of your phone, you will continue to receive the data notifications "your phone has attempted to use data etc". If you keep mobile data 'OFF',  MMS will not be available to you.

I hope this clarifies,

Hello, my plan includes nation-wide texting, calling, and image sending/recieving through text. However, it says i need to turn on data to send and download the pictures. Is there anyway to set up an APN thats mms only so i don't accidently get charged by apps running in the background? Thanks

@willson1 You do not need a data plan in order to send and receive MMS but you do need to have the data enabled in order to send and receive MMS.

I know you are concern about accidentally getting  data charges, if an app is trying to use data you will get a text notifying you and the option to buy a data pack.

You can edit your APN settings and where it says "APN type" remove everything and just leave mms and then save it and you will be good.

I have an Iphone 5s and my plan is included with Unlimited Picture messages but whenever I try to send picture without wifi or imessage the pictures is not sending. I dont have a data to my plan and having unlimited picture messages is really important to me.

Hello RNaag,

  Welcome to the community!

Have you enabled data? You do not require a data plan to send MMS, however data does need to be enabled.

**edit** If you do not have a data plan, you might consider restricting data on your apps. Enabling data to send/receive MMS will also enable apps to access data. Since you do not have a data plan, the apps requiring data will attempt to access data and you will constantly receive text messages regarding the purchase of data plans or passes**

Have you verified your phone is using the correct APN and MMS settings? You can verify them here.

Hope this helps Smiley

Cheers

Does it have a charge when I enabled data just to send messages?

Hello again,

My apologies for not making it clear in my previous text. There is no data charge when sending/receiving MMS while in Canada. Within Canada, the data contained within a MMS is not counted as data per se, it is just counted as a MMS message. Note however, that it will be counted as MMS plus roaming data **edit** (sending) or roaming data (receiving)** while outside of Canada.

**edit** Sending/receiving MMS without a data plan will not trigger the purchase a data plan/pass text. It is the other apps or phone functions which attempt to access data that will trigger that text**

Hope this clarifies Smiley
