Hey everyone! Thought I would share this information I read online today with Fido Users.
Samsung has added a new region lock to this newest line of Smartphones (S3/4 Note3 etc) manufacturied after July 2013. This new region lock is different to the current carrier lock we have in Canada. At the time of writing there is no unlock method for this region lock. These phones can be identified by an sticker on the phone box describing this region lock.
This will only impact users who wish to use a local sim card when traveling outside the NORTH AMERICAN region (ie Europe, Asia).
So say you purchased a new S4 from Fido with this type to lock. It will be BOTH carrier locked and region locked. When you ask Fido to perform an 'unlock' for your phone. Fido can only do the carrier unlock, so you can use your phone with Bell/Roger and even with Sprint/At&T etc. but it will not work with Europe carriers or Asia carriers.
This seems to be a descision by Samsung and not Fido. so complaining to Fido won't help.
This decision affects me becuase I travel to asia from time to time and use local sim while I'm there. I hope this will help others like me to make informed purchase decison when selecting their new smartphones
I got some new info from the Internet. Its a developing news so don't blame me for misinfomation, Samsung is the one to blame becuase they did not provide clear information on what's been done to their phone.
Here are more information about this new region lock.
1. If you purchased a brand new North American Samsung phone (either unlocked or from Fido). Use a SIM card from a North American provider (Fido, Rogers, At&t) upon first boot and the phone will be region unlocked, you can now use the phone with any sim card in the world.
2. If your NA Phone used a non NA sim card upon first boot, (ie, used a Europe carrier sim card) you can use the phone with Europe sim carriers ONLY, the phone is now region locked and if you travel to NA it will not work with a local carrier.
Given this new info. Only people will be affected will be those who purchased their NEW, UNOPENED phones through grey markets (ebay, overseas). I guess samsung is trying to bar people from buying grey market items.
If you are a victum of #2 above, you can take your Samsung to an 'authorized service dealer' (NOT FIDO, more like Samsung Canada) to have the region lock removed. There is no mentioning of a price at this point in time.
great read. strange that samsung would do this... who woulda thought... I like the Note and have debated looking into it, I enjoy my iphone5 though. This makes me want to stay clear of them all together
