MMS group messaging iPhone?

Hi,

So I just moved to Fido and got a Galaxy S3 with the unlimited messaging (SMS and MMS). I previously had an iPhone on Telus. I have had to figure out how group messaging works on Android, because of course iMessage is iOS-only. Part of that was installing a 3rd-party messaging app (there are lots) because the stock app doesn't include group messaging until Android 4.2, which S3 users are all waiting for breathlessly. Anyway, the group messaging works fine with the 3rd party app (Go SMS Pro is the one I'm using, but there are others). It sends the message as an MMS and it does allow you to have a group conversation, just like iMessage. However, thus far, this only works with other Android users.

I have done a lot of Googling, and iPhones can indeed do MMS group messaging. Lots of people around the world are doing it, because not everyone has iMessage. You just go to Settings > Messages and enable group messaging, which is in the MMS section of the page. However, not one person I know who has an iPhone has this option displayed. I've seen screenshots of it, but it just isn't there when I look at my friend's iPhone 4S. It also wasn't there on my Telus iPhone 3GS.

My friend with the iPhone 4S is also on Fido, and has the same unlimited SMS and MMS plan that I do (actually, she pays substantially more for it). Why can't she use this feature of MMS that I can? I've phoned Fido but no one I've spoken to has had an answer for me.

Anyone know what's going on? I can't be the only person who has run into this issue.

Hi there,

It's not a compatibility issue. Rather, it's a setting that has been removed from some iPhones, almost certainly by the carriers.

The app is simply an SMS/MMS app. On Android phones, you can use the one that comes with your phone, or you can download a different one. Just like you can download different keyboards to use instead of the default one.

MMS Group messaging isn't a feature specific to this app - it's a feature of the MMS technology. As you can see from this article on apple.com (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5760), it is supported on iPhones as well. The second screenshot on that page shows the setting that is, however, missing from every iPhone I have looked at here in Victoria. I'm beginning to think it's a Canada thing, as I've read dozens and dozens of forum threads from the US in which people have managed to have perfect group conversations with a mix of Android and iPhones.

I'd like to know why this is disabled on Fido and other carriers (such as Telus), when MMS messaging is widespread. Any thoughts?

It just looks like iPhones are incompatible with that Android app you are using,  which is not surprising at all. Just like video calling; it won't work between the two.

Very interesting,  however I have no idea why that feature would be disabled sorry,

I've continued to periodically monitor the status of MMS group messaging, mostly in North America. It's something that is variably-enabled, not only on iPhones, but now also Windows 8 phones. Verizon has just chosen to start enabling it on at least some models of Windows 8 phones, for instance (they did in September).

What is very clear is that this feature is not being enabled (also known as 'disabled') by carriers.

In the context of iMessage/SMS integration, Google+ Hangouts/SMS integration (coming soon), and no doubt something similar coming from Microsoft, MMS Group Messaging is a service that can help people migrate from one of those ecosystems to another and continue the group conversations they have been enjoying.

I urge Fido to enable this feature on all its phones as soon as possible.

Hi Fido,

I'd like to bring up this issue again... is it really being looked into? We've received several carrier updates since May and none of them have properly enabled Group MMS on the iPhone. I have cellular+wifi iPad and it still seems to be working fine there (GroupModeEnabled has been set to TRUE in Fido's iPad carrier bundle)... can we get someone to maybe do the same for the iPhone's carrier bundle?

To clarify, yes, the "group messages are going out" for us too, they're just not being kept in the same message thread (like they are on an iPad) and are instead being sent as individual texts to all of the recipients.

Thanks!

Hey @d_leung,

I've resent the request to have this looked into. I'll update this thread the moment I get a response!

Same problem with my iPhone 5s. I have a Fido plan but do not see the "Group Messaging" option in the iPhone settings.

This thread was started in 2013. It's 2016 now, and the problem still isn't resolved??? Any wagers on Fido/Rogers fixing it this year? What a joke of a company!

They don't have this issue with providers in the U.S. Why do we Canadians put up with this? Paying through the nose to use a cell phone (compared to U.S. rates), and the company doesn't give a rip about providing good service!!

Hey jfklein.

We're still looking into this. We'll post an update when we have more information.

Bump? Did the status of this issue changed?

I still can't use group MMS on my iphone6...

We'll update the tread once we have more information. Smiley

I got the exact same problem, I tried a Telus sim card and the option appeared. It is controlled by the carrier, is fido working on a fix? I tried to explain the issue to a fido technician and he had no idea what I was talking about.

Hey @mmmarccccc.

Just to be sure I flag the correct issue. The problem isn't that you can't send MMS to a group but that once the MMS is sent to a group, it's no longer possible to reply to the same group?

I tested it out and a MMS can be send to a group if we add 2 persons on the recipients list.

The more details I get the easier it will be for me to flag this to the correct department. Thank you!

I can send a mms to a group, but when someone responds, its in a new conversation, 1 to 1, with no suject on top of it. Just like the picture someone uploaded in this thread. If someone initiates a group text with me, I cant see the recipients, and it starts with no subject

Everything works perfectly, as it should be, on my mac (sms transfer).

Thanks for the information. I will verify if we have any information on this.

Thanks for your patience on this everyone. We're working with Apple to enable Group MMS as soon as possible. We will post further updates on the feature here as they become available.

Is there something being done about this?

Hey @mmmarccccc

We're still looking into this but we'll be sure to keep everyone in the loop as soon as we have updates!

Alright, Apple released iOS 10.2.

After that I got an update from the operator and the Group MMS option is now in my settings!

Not sure if its working but the option is there Very_Happy

Hey!

@mmmarccccc@verd02@ablanchet@jfklein ,@jonbharris @d_leung and @community!

Great news! If you have the latest IOS update ( minimum version 27.1 ), you will be able to use the feature. Thanks for your patience everyone! Smiley
