Leaving abroad for a year - suspend account and reactivate upon return?

Hi,

I have been with Fido since 2005 and my current 3 year contract ends in February 2013.  I will be going abroad for exactly one year, and I don't know what to do with my contract, since I want to keep my number and plan to stay with Fido once I return from travelling.  Is there a way to "freeze" my contract for a year, or a portion of the year and reactivate when I get back?     Thank you for your help.

Hi CFT,

After many requests for this, we have now different options we can offer when you are going away for a few months. You can familiarize yourself with these options over the chat, the phone, or our new check-in-service as well.

No, Fido does not offer 'vacation hold's on contracts (such as you might do with newspaper, internet or utility bills). You are really limited to 3 choices.

  1. Continue to make your payments while you are away
  2. call and have them drop your plan to a cheaper one (lowest possible is $10/month) but this will likely trigger any cancelation fees on your account that depend on maintaining a $50 or higher monthly bill. Doing this might result in a $200-$500 termination fee so find out first.
  3. port your number to free service, like freephoneline or DellVoice or a VOIP service. This would still result in termination fees, but at least you wouldn't continue to pay any monthly amount, unlike option 1 and 2 but you would keep your number. Depending on the service you choose, it would also allow you to continue to receive calls while you are away, over whatever VOIP services they offer. When you return yuo can then port you old number to Fido or any other carrier.

I would still have preferred a vacation hold...

Any details on what that means? Sort of a vague answer.
