Bring back per-second billing!

i've started a thread on Koodo Mobile's forum in February 2012. In it, it explained how it was a shame that Koodo removed per-second billing, and how Fido was like a loyal dog as the first carrier in Canada to introduce us to per-second billing. i recalled a commercial where a woman was in a taxi with her dog, and commented about her taxi ride lasting twenty seconds and how she shouldn't pay for a minute. The commercial was nice, to the point and it was lovely to see Fido doing this.  But is this all passé now?

Koodo's move was actually precedented by Bell Mobility. When Bell purchased the entirity of Virgin Mobile Canada, which only charged per minute, Bell started neglecting its own Solo Mobile brand by eliminating advertising and retail presence for it.  Bell not only bought Virgin outright in an greater effort to market towards youth, it also bought Virgin to discourage Solo customers from keeping their per-second monthly plans.

When Fido decided to put the heartwarming per-second dog on a leach after nearly 15 years of servicing the public, nothing nice nor positive was done to counter-balance this loss.  Nothing at all.  Plans are still only good for local calls, the amount of minutes is rock bottom low, and we still have to pay for calling Fido customers on a different account!  Besides access to its own GSM network and Rogers', does Fido have any tricks left to amaze the public, or are they just a bad wallet-biting pet?

This is a call for Fido to continue providing exceptional value with per-second billing.  Contrary to what it claims, it actually makes a difference, especially on the severely minute-limited plans currently in Fido's lineup.  Marketing is pointless if a company doesn't live up to it, if it lies or greatly exaggerates about its benefits as an attempt to camouflage its flaws.  Only Fido customers are allowed on this forum, which will make for an interesting discussion to see if Fido will…

…bring back per-second billing!

Re: Bring back per-second billing!

I've upgraded my plan several times since July 4th to take advantage of the their new deals and was never told that the per-second billing was changed to per-minute. I make it a point to specifically ask how the new plans differs from my current plan and no one ever mentioned this change.

I just found out today after updating my plan again. Annoying.

Re: Bring back per-second billing!

I have been with fido for 6 years and recentely I took a new plan for my wife from Fido. I just found out about this brutal minute-billing after looking at my wife cell phone bill.

I pretty annoyed by this. I hope something ends this horrible policies ( I call it stealing money from people) which is due to monopoly of few companies in telecominication in Canada.

I was not informed about this fact from Fido. I always had this in mind that Fido billing is second based.

I have been recomending many of my freinds to take Fido. I won't do it again.

Fiod the same as its boss compant, Rogers the thief!

Re: Bring back per-second billing!

Usually they are very vocal about letting people know it's per-minute now, especially when you request a plan change. If it's a new line, I wouldn't expect them to say anything since there is absolutely no claim anywhere on any Fido marketing or website that offers per-second billing anymore so therefore they certainly shoudn't be expected to mention it for new customers. However, for old customers switching plans, given the much larger tradeoffs of the new plans hardly anyone changes their mind and wants old plans back.

Let's face it...the old per-second plans were garbage since you had to pay extra for call display and voicemail and long distance. I would not want the old plans back....no way. I would think it's fair that if you want your old per-second billing back that you should be willing to pay $7 for call display and be restricted to local calling only again.

Re: Bring back per-second billing!

To those who still cling to the idea of per second billing sturcture fido offers a few years ago you have to let it go and consider the current plans benefits.  Initially it seems it a good thing, but compare to the minutes offered back then (from 50 to 200mins) to current plans (200-500mins) for the equivilent monthly rates it is a better alternative.  I can't think of any other country still uses per second billing, calling minutes are so cheap and unneeded nowdays most people don't care anymore. Messesing apps such as skype and viber includes voice call features which pretty much descontinues the need for voice minutes.

If there is any area people should complain about, its overusage rates for data. However from my knowledge Fido has the best overage data rates. For most plans, fido's over usage data rates are charged in blocks of $5/250MB data. Meaning if I go over 1MB on my plan I pay $5 extra. It might seem like a lot, but other companies charges goes up as high as $15/250MB, even if your base plan only has 200MB to start with.

I never understand that type of reasoning of bringing in other, unrelated topics, in order to justify something. Yes, it was nice to see Canadian carriers catch up with the rest of the world by including CM and even their odd mini-VM. But that doesn't say anything about justifying the move to per minute. Per second billing doesn't somehow pervent a carrier from adding VM/CD. They aren't related.

Simple question: which is better for a customer, per second or per minute billing?
