I've subscribed to a 3 year voice and data plan with an iphone 4. Next month i'm going to France for 4 months, and i'd like to be able to use my phone there with a local provider.
Can I end my subscription early and have my iphone unlocked by Fido? I'm aware there is a fee for both actions, but wether Fido actually allows me to do that in my case seems unclear.
Since neither the Gevey or jailbreaking community have an answer to unlocking baseband 04.11.08 yet, this would be the only possible way i can use my phone abroad without paying extensive fees.

Yes you can have it unlocked if you are willing to pay the termination fees for your contract. The eligibility for unlocks is effectively:
1) Have a active Fido account
2) Have no obligations on the phone (i.e. no contract remaining)
3) Pay $50 unlock fee
So, as long as you are willing to pay the ECF and DECF to terminate your contract and keep your account open and pay the $50 unlock fee you should be good to get it unlocked. Likely your termination fees will total $400-$500, but you will have to call in to confirm. When you can in, instruct them that you want to terminate your contract and pay the fees and to have your phone unlocked. They will process the termination and then transfer you to the unlock team. They will charge you the $50 unlock fee and process the unlock. Restore your phone in iTunes and you will be unlocked.
